John P. Kee And New Life - Life And Favor - 2012

Prince John Kee, producer and pastor of Fellowship Church New Life in Charlotte, NC. In a 1996 interview, he explained: ". God delivered me in the inner city of Charlotte of a life that reflects the evils we still face today," for a revival meeting in PTL, he became involved with the Fellowship Church New Life . Dedicated to gospel music, he started singing and formed the New Life Community Choir group. His first professional break came in 1985 when he became the first artist to be invited to record vocals on two tracks for the Gospel Music Workshop of America annual recording mass choir. In 1987 he released his first album with the New Life Choir, Yes Man, which was recorded during a 1987 performance, the brothers in the Youth Convention Unity. In 1989 he released his first solo album. Early 90s brought the beginning of what would be an avalanche of awards for Kee including more than a dozen stellar awards, 20 GMWA Excellence Awards, one Soul Train Award and two Billboard Music Awards. In 1995, Kee and New Life Community Choir reached their first commercial peak with the album winning Gold Show Up, which was also nominated for a Grammy, as was his 1999 album Force. In the late 90s, Kee said a ministry of full time to his list of accomplishments, balancing work in the Church Community New Life with his music career. In addition to his own albums, Kee produced albums for Victory in Praise Mass Choir, Shawn McClemore and New Image, and Drea Randle. In 2000 Kee returned to the recording studio with the choir, producing a double critically acclaimed album, Not Guilty, which used passionate praise & worship music mixed with hip-hop and urban elements to deliver the message of redemption through Christ to an audience tired millennial.

Ulikuwa ugomvi mkubwa, wakati huo Mabela amekwisha ondoka hata kumuuliza alikuwa ana maana gani haikuwezekana. "WOW" is a series of annual compilation albums featuring contemporary Christian music. Umati mkubwa wa watu ulijitokeza kumzika Ally Rashid mwanamuziki wa siku nyingi ambaye alifariki jana mchana. Mazishi yalifanyika katika makaburi ya Keko Machungwa  kaburi lake likiwa jirani kabisa na la mwanamuziki mwingine nguli Moshi William. Mazishi ya Mzee Alyy yalifanyika muda wa saa nne asubuhi pia na kuhudhuriwa na wanamuziki wengi wa zamani na hata wa sasa akiwemo Mchizi Mox ambaye alikuwa kimwita marehemu baba yake mdogo.

Mwanamuziki wa zamani aliyekuwa mpiga saxaphone aliyejulikana pia kama Mzee Saboso, Ally Rashid amefariki dunia leo mchana. Mzee Ally kwa mara ya mwisho alikuwa bendi ya Msondo Ngoma. Wiki chache zilizopita mtandao wetu ulifanya mahojiano marefu na Mzee Ally hivyo soma hapa historia ndefu ya Mzee huyu. Mpaka muda huu ndugu zake hasa wa Zanzibar ambako ndio kwao walikuwa hawajatoa taarifa ya taratibu za maziko. Mara tutakapopata taarifa zaidi tutawataarifu.

African Beat ilianzishwa mwaka 1998, baada ya Mafumu Bilali Bombenga kujiengua kutoka katika bendi ya African Stars ambayo nayo ilianzishwa mnamo mwaka 1994 kwenye Hoteli ya Bahari Beach, jijini Dar es Salaam, huku yeye akiwa ndiye  muanzilishi.
Bombenga anakumbuka kuwa, wakati akiwa na African Stars ambayo hata jina lake alilibuni yeye, walitamba na vibao kama ‘Sakatu Sakatu’, ‘Mayanga’, ‘Maya’, ‘Afrika’ na ‘Dance Dance’.
Baadhi ya wanamuziki waliokuwa wakiunda kundi hilo la African Stars linalojulikana zaidi hivi sasa kama ‘Twanga Pepeta’, ni Bob Gady, Andy Swebe, Alfa Nyuki, Palmena Mahalu, Pamela pamoja na Kayumbu ‘Amigolas’.
“Historia yangu kimuziki, inaanzia mwaka 1972 nilipojiunga na bendi ya Morogoro Jazz, wakati huo nikitokea jeshini Makutupola,” anasema Bombenga.
Mwaka 1973 aliingia na Western Jazz alioshiriki nao kupiga Saxophone, kwenye vibao kadhaa vya bendi hiyo, vikiwamo ‘Hakika’, ‘Kazi ni Kazi’ na ‘Sadaka’, kabla ya mwaka 1978 kutimkia Dar International.
Pamoja na kupuliza kiustadi Saxophone pamoja na kuimba kwenye nyimbo kemkemu, zikiwamo ‘Mayasa’ na ‘Zuena’, lakini pia Bombenga alishiriki kucharaza gitaa la Solo katika kibao ‘Vick’.
Mwaka 1979 alibeba mabegi na kutua Vijana Jazz Band alikotunga kibao ‘Taabu’ na pia kushiriki kukiimba, huku kadhalika akipuliza Saxophone kwenye vibao kama ‘Chiku’ na ‘Matata Ndani ya Nyumba’.
Mwaka 1980 alihamia Maquis ambapo alitesa kwa kupuliza Saxophone kwenye vibao viiingi, baadhi yake ni ‘Zoa’, ‘Sina Ndugu’, ‘Noel’ pamoja na ‘Maige’.
“Nilikaa Maquis hadi mwaka 1984 nilipochomoka tena na kuhamia Bima Lee nilikokutana na wakali kama Jerry Nashon ‘Dudumizi’, Shaaban Dede ‘Super Motisha’, ‘Joseph Mulenga ‘Spoiller’,” anasema Bombenga.
Mwaka 1985 Bombenga alikuwa mwanzilishi wa bendi ya MK Group ‘Ngoma za Maghorofani’, kabla ya mwaka 1986 kuwa tena mmoja wa waanzilishi wa Tancut Almas ya Iringa.
Mwaka 1987 alirejea tena MK Group ambapo nyimbo yake ya kwanza kupuliza Saxophone awamu hii ya pili ilikuwa ni ‘Utakuja Kuanguka Kwenye Matope’.
Mwaka 1989, kaka yake Adam Kinguti alirudi nchini akitokea Sudan alipokuwa akifanyakazi kwenye ofisi za ubalozi, wakaanzisha Bicco Stars na yeye kushiriki kupuliza Saxophone kwenye vibao kadhaa kama vile; ‘Magret Mage’, ‘Wapangaji’ na Kisamvu’.
Mwaka 1991 alitoka Bicco akiwa na mpapasaji kinanda mahiri wa kike ambaye kwa sasa ni marehemu, Asia Daruweshi, baada ya kutokea hali ya kutoelewana kati yake na Kinguti, wakaanzisha Zanzibar Sound.
“Tukiwa na Zanzibar Sound, tulipata mkataba katika Hoteli ya Mount Meru, Arusha na mwaka mmoja baadaye mwanamuziki mwenzetu kwenye bendi hiyo, Kanku Kerry alipata mkataba Japan tukaondoka naye kwa sharti la sasa kujiita Kilimanjaro Connection,” anasema Bombenga.
Walizunguka nchi nyingi za bara la Asia wakiwa na Kilimanjaro Connection, waliporudi mwaka 1994 alijitoa na baadaye kidogo Asia naye alijitoa na kurudisha upya bendi yake ya Zanzibar Sound na kurejea mkataba wake Bahari Beach Hotel.
Bombenga wakati huu akabaki bila bendi, ambapo muda si muda Asia alipata kazi nchini Bahrain na kumuachia Bombenga mkataba wa Bahari Beach.
Baada ya kuona ameachiwa mkataba wakati hana bendi, Bombenga ndipo alipomfuata Baraka Msirwa na kumuomba vyombo vya muziki ambapo alimpa kwavile havikuwa na kazi kutokana na kufa kwa bendi za MK Group, MK Beat na MK Sound zilizokuwa zikivitumia.
“Hicho ndio kilikuwa chanzo cha bendi ya African Stars niliyoibuni mwenyewe hadi jina, iliyoniletea uhasama mkubwa na dada yangu Asha Baraka baada ya kujitoa,” anasema Bombenga.
Kwa upande wa warithi, Bombenga ana wanawe wawili wanaoonekana kufuata vema nyayo zake, ambao ni Feruzi (22) anayepapasa kinanda na Aziza (19) ambaye ni mwimbaji.  
Bombenga mwenye miaka 40 katika muziki na aliyejifunza mengi kupitia sanaa hiyo, anavutiwa na waimbaji; Isha Mashauzi, Nasseeb Abdul ‘Diamond’, Flora Mbasha na Hassan Bitchuka.
Anatoa ushauri kwa wanamuziki wa Dansi kuketi na vyombo vya habari na kuzungumza, ili kuangalia namna ya kuurejesha kwenye chati muziki wao ambao umekuwa ukiporomoka kila uchao.
Mikakati ya baadaye ya Bombenga ni kustaafu muziki na kujihusisha na ujasiriamali, baada ya kwenda nchini Kinshasa na kufanya maonesho na baadhi ya mastaa wa huko.
“Mimi ni mtoto wa tano katika familia ya mzee Bilali Mafumu, niliyepata elimu yangu ya msingi katika shule ya H.H Agakhan, Kigoma nilikofaulu na kujiunga na shule ya sekondari Kazima, Tabora nilikosoma hadi kidato cha nne,” anasema Bombenga.
Baada ya kumaliza elimu ya sekondari, Bombenga aliyesoma shule moja ya sekondari na mbunge wa Tabora, Ismail Aden Rage, anasema kuwa 1972 alijiunga na JKT kwa mujibu wa sheria ya enzi hizo, alikojifunza kuimba na kupuliza Saxophone.
Anaishi Vingunguti, jijini Dar es Salaam na familia yake ambayo ni mkewe na watoto saba, huku akitamani kuongeza wake wengine hadi wawe watatu.





  

MFAHAMU MKONGWE WA SAXOPHONE RASHID PEMBE

 “TUKIO la kuutumikia Umoja wa Vijana kwa muda wa miaka 18 na kulipwa mafao ya sh. Mil 1.6, baada ya kustaafu, ndilo linalosumbua kichwa changu hadi leo, ambalo kiukweli sitakaa nikalisahau,” ndivyo anavyoanza kueleza Rashid Pembe.
Pembe ni kati ya wanamuziki nguli wa miondoko ya Dansi, aliyetokea mbali hadi sasa ambapo anaonekana amepata mafanikio kiasi kupitia sanaa hiyo.
Mwaka 2005 aliomba kustaafu kuitumikia bendi ya Vijana Jazz aliyokuwa nayo tangu Aprili, 1987, baada ya kuona imeanza kuyumba na kupoteza mwelekeo na kilichomkuta ndio hicho ambacho wakati fulani aliwahi kujutia kuwa mwanamuziki wa Dansi.
Kwa sasa Pembe anamiliki bendi yake binafsi, inayojulikana kama Mark Band, ambayo chanzo cha jina ‘MARK’ ni herufi moja moja za majina ya mwanzo ya wanamuziki wanne wanzilishi wa bendi hiyo.
Wanamuziki hao na nafasi zao kwenye mabano, ni pamoja na Mgazija (Bass), Alex (Solo), Rashid (Saxophone) na Karamazoo (Saxophone).
Mark Band iliasisiwa rasmi mwaka 2006, ambapo baada ya kuiunda, waliamua kuwaongeza wanamuziki wengine kama Said Majivu (Drums), Said Makelele (Tarumbeta) pamoja na Noel Minja na Balusi Kitembo ambao ni waimbaji.
Akizungumza jijini Dar es Salaam, Pembe anasema kuwa, kama ilivyo kwa bendi nyingine nyingi, walipoanzisha bendi hiyo walikumbana na changamoto kemkemu, ikiwa ni pamoja na kukodi vyombo kwa gharama kubwa.
“Hata hivyo, Mungu alitujalia kwani baadaye tulipata mkataba wa kutumbuiza siku tatu katika wiki, kwenye Hoteli ya See Criff, jijini Dar es Salaam, tukaanza kujipanga kwa ununuzi wa vyombo vyetu wenyewe,” anasema Pembe.
Anamtaja Waziri wa zamani wa Mambo ya Ndani, Mheshimiwa Mohammed Seif Khatibu kuwa ni kati ya watu waliochangia kuwakwamua ndani ya Mark Band kwa kuwaombea mkopo wa sh. Mil 3, kwenye Hoteli ya See Criff walioilipa polepole kwa kufanya shoo hapo.
Waliitumia pesa hiyo kwa kuchanganya na nyingine walizipata kupitia maonesho yao mengine na kununua vyombo kidogo kidogo hadi sasa wanapomiliki vyombo vyenye thamani zaidi ya sh. Mil 50.
Mwaka 2010 waliingia mkataba na Kampuni ya Kijerumani iitwayo ‘Mother Africa’ wa kutumbuiza nchi mbalimbali kama vile; Misri, Sweden, na nchi za Amerika ya Kusini kama vile Chile na Peru na pia  Ufaransa pamoja na Ujerumani yenyewe.
“Tumekuwa na maisha ya namna hiyo kwa muda mrefu sasa, ya kutumbuiza nje, huku hapa nchini tukifanya shoo nyakati za likizo zetu tu,” anasema Pembe.
Pembe anasema, tayari kwa upande wa nyimbo, Mark Band imeshafyatua albamu nzima, ambapo ni kibao kimoja tu kiitwacho ‘Matukio’ ndicho walichokisambaza kwenye vituo mbalimbali vya radio na runinga hapa nchini.
Vibao vingine kwenye albamu hiyo waliyoirekodia katika Studio za Bakunde Production, jijini Dar es Salaam, ni ‘The Girl From Tanzania’, ‘Baba Kaleta Panya Remix’, ‘Amani’, ‘Anjela’ na ‘Pombe’.
Pembe anasema, mafanikio ndani ya Mark Band ni kumiliki vyombo vya thamani, kuwa na akaunti nono na kujulikana duniani kote, huku mafanikio kwa upande wake ikiwa ni kuwasomesha wanawe na kuanza kuwanunulia viwanja kila mmoja na chake.
Akielezea namna alivyojifunza muziki, Pembe anasema kuwa mwaka 1981 alijiunga na Jeshi la Polisi kama fundi ujenzi, baada ya kumaliza masomo yake ya Sekondari.
“Nikiwa Polisi, wakati najiandaa kupelekwa chuo cha ufundi, Marehemu Tx Moshi William aliyekuwa kwenye bendi ya jeshi hilo wakati huo, alinishauri kuachana na ufundi na kujiunga na kitengo cha Bendi,” anafahamisha Pembe.
Pembe anasema, Tx Moshi alimshauri hivyo kwasababu waliishi mtaa mmoja kabla hawajawa polisi, ambapo alikuwa akimuona namna alivyokuwa ‘mtundu’ kwenye gitaa la Solo.
Kiongozi wa polisi wakati huo, Mzee Mayagilo akamuombea Pembe uhamisho, lakini pia wakati anasubiri kwenda kuendelezwa ujuzi wa kupiga gitaa, mpigaji Saxophone wao, Abdul Mwalugembe akastaafu.
“Tukio hilo lilimfanya Mayagilo kunibadilisha na nikaanza kusomea upulizaji Saxophone, ambapo nilisoma nadharia mwezi mmoja na nusu na vitendo pia muda kama huo, nikawa fiti kabisa,” anasema Pembe.
Anasema kuwa, alirekodi nyimbo nyingi Polisi Jazz, baada ya zile zilizoambatana na ‘Mwaka wa Watoto’, ambazo hata hivyo hazikuchukua chati.
Mwaka 1987 alistaafu ligwaride akiwa askari mwenye cheo cha Koplo, kwa kununua mkataba, baada ya kuvunjika ghafla kwa ahadi aliyopewa na Jeshi, ya kupelekwa nchini Korea kuendelezwa kimasomo, kwa sababu alihisi ndoto zake za kufika mbali kielimu zilishagonga ukuta wa zege.
Akiwa na Vijana Jazz aliyojiunga nayo wakati imetoka kuipua vibao kama ‘Mari Maria’, ‘Ambha’ na ‘Bujumbura’, Pembe anasema kuwa, kibao chake cha kwanza kurekodi kilikuwa ni kile kinachokwenda kwa jina la ‘Miaka 10 ya Umoja wa Vijana’.
“Hadi nafungasha virago Vijana Jazz, niliyoitumikia na kushika nyadhifa mbalimbali za Kiuongozi, nilikuwa nimetunga vibao vinne ambavyo ni ‘Siri ya Ndani’, ‘Baba Sammy’, ‘Mwanamke Salo’ na ‘Dar es Salaam’,” anasema Pembe.
Pembe asiyependa kuona bendi haina maendeleo na ambaye katika muziki anawakubali King Enock na Elias Nyoni, anasema hajapata mafanikio wakati wa Vijana Jazz, zaidi ya kusafiri nchini Zambia pekee.
Kwa mtazamo wake, Pembe anaona biashara huria na udhamini katika vipindi, kwenye vituo mbalimbali vya radio na runinga ndivyo vinavyochangia kwa kiasi kikubwa kuliua Dansi.
Anasema mfumuko wa vituo vingi vya radio na runinga umefanya kuwapo na upendeleo binafsi kwa badhi ya mitindo ya muziki, huku mingine ikididimizwa kwa makusudi kwa manufaa ya watu wachache kama si mtu mmoja.
“Watoto wangu wanaoonekana kufuata kwa karibu zaidi nyayo zangu baba yao, ni Omary (21) ambaye yuko Kisiwani Zanzibar hivi sasa akijishughulisha na muziki wa Hoteli na Mwajuma (15), ambaye bado ni mwanafunzi wa darasa la saba,” anasema Pembe.
Tayari Pembe aliye mbioni kufungua chuo cha Saxophone, ameshawaambukiza wengi kipaji cha upulizaji chombo hicho, badhi yao wakiwa ni wanamuziki wa Dansi, Injili pamoja na miondoko mingine.
Aidha, badhi ya wasanii wa miondoko ya muziki wa Bongofleva waliomshirikisha kupuliza Saxophone kwenye vibao vyao, ni pamoja na Q Chillah, Kikosi cha Mizinga na Cindi katika nyimbo ya pamoja na Ommy Dimpoz.
Huyo ndiye Rashid Pembe, baba wa familia mwenye mke na watoto sita ambao ni Rehema, Pembe, Amina, Omary, Khalid na Mwajuma.
Alizaliwa mwaka 1957, Kisarawe Pwani na kupata elimu ya msingi katika shule nne tofauti ambazo ni Kisarawe, Vikindu, Sotele na Kisiju zote za mkoani Pwani, kuanzia mwaka 1966 hadi mwaka 1972
